The two destinations are open the whole year round, however, June – September & December – February are the best time to visit Rwanda & Uganda. January is the dry season in both destinations. It’s a hot month, with daytime temperatures peaking in the high 20s in the south and in the 30s in the North of Rwanda & South of Uganda. It’s a good time to go gorilla trekking in Rwanda & chimpanzees in both destinations and visit National Parks in East and West of Rwanda-Akagera & Nyungwe National Parks respectively. In the south of Uganda-Queen Elizabeth, Lake Mburo, Kibale, and Murchison Falls National Park but it’s too hot and dusty to be an ideal time to visit Kidepo Valley National Park in the north of Uganda.
Visit Rwanda and Uganda in February.
February is a relatively dry month in both destinations, so it’s a good time to visit National Parks in the south of Uganda and East of Rwanda and gorilla trekking in Uganda & chimpanzees. In the north of Uganda, it’s particularly hot and dusty and not an ideal time for wildlife viewing.
Visit Uganda and Rwanda in March.
March marks the start of the first rainy season of the year in southern Uganda, and in northern Rwanda while it’s still dry in northern Uganda. It’s not an ideal time to travel for gorilla trekking and wildlife viewing. However, the parks are open for tourists this month.
Visit Uganda and Rwanda in April.
April is the wettest month in both destinations. It’s the low season for tourism, which means you can find discounted rates at lodges and hotels. For bird lovers, March and April are probably the best months to visit Uganda and Rwanda, partly because resident birds are boosted by a large number of passage migrants, but also because it is the main breeding season, and several species are at their most colorful and conspicuous. Uganda is one of the notable countries in Africa that receives many visitors for bird watching in Uganda.
Visit Rwanda and Uganda in May
May is another rainy month across Rwanda and Uganda, although it’s not as wet as April. It’s still the low season, so I will enjoy the less crowded parks and lodges.
Visit Uganda and Rwanda in June
June is one of the driest months of the year in both countries. It’s one of the best months for wildlife viewing in both destinations, and it’s also a great month for gorilla trekking in Rwanda and Uganda. It’s the start of the peak season in Uganda and Rwanda, and you’ll need to book far in advance for gorilla trekking permits and lodging in popular spots in both destinations.
Visit Rwanda and Uganda in July
Because of its low rainfall, July is one of the best months for safaris and gorilla trekking in Rwanda and Uganda. In National Parks such as Queen Elizabeth, Murchison Falls, and Lake Mburo National Park in Uganda, animals congregate around water sources, making it easier to spot them, and also in Akagera National Park in Rwanda. This is also a great month for gorilla trekking, as the mostly dry weather means that the paths are easier to hike on. It’s one of the most popular months for travel, however, so you’ll need to book ahead for gorilla trekking permits and lodging.
Visit Uganda and Rwanda in August
August is another excellent month to visit Rwanda and Uganda. Falling at the end of the dry season, August is a great time for gorilla tracking, and there’s superb wildlife viewing in national parks in both countries with dry vegetation and animals congregating around water sources.
Visit Uganda and Rwanda in September
In September, the second rainy season of the year begins in Uganda and Rwanda, while the rainy season continues in northern Uganda. It’s not an ideal month to visit national parks or go gorilla trekking, but if you’re willing to put up with heavy thundershowers, challenging roads, and challenging hiking to find gorillas, then you’ll be able to have such a wonderful and amazing experience.

After April, November is the second wettest month in both countries. Few tourists visit this month because it’s difficult to spot wildlife in the national parks and the muddy paths and thundershowers make gorilla trekking in Bwindi Impenetrable National Park more challenging but all in all, that’s an unforgettable experience as well in Volcanoes National Park.

The rains ease off in December, making it a good month for travel to both countries, and it’s an ideal time for wildlife viewing in both destinations as well as gorilla and chimpanzee trekking.
